Reverend Gary Davis – Blues Guitar Master

Reverend Gary Davis – Blues Guitar Master

Gary Davis born in South Carolina in 1896 was a blues musician proficient in the technique generally named Piedmont, which is the main ragtime style.

Although we often use the the overall description ‘ragtime’ guitar, there are other categories within, for example, piano style ragtime picking and ragtime blues. The ragtime blues guitar style originated because guitarists tried to emulate the joyful dance sound of the playing style created by Scott Joplin and others. Guitarists in that time were enthused by the alternating ‘bum-chick’ bass patterns and general syncopation.

In that part of the South, when The Reverend was starting his playing career, the accepted guitar master was a man named Willie Walker, who picked incredibly precisely and very rapidly, a bit like Blind Blake. Gary Davis picked up several tunes up from Walker, including Cincinnati Flow Drag and Make Believe Stunt. That encounter was possibly vital to the growth of Davis’ style, without doubt expanding his range and song list. By his own account, the Reverend ‘was scared o’ no guitarist’ by the time he was 30 years old.

Although a master in ragtime picking, he could expertly play in any style and in all keys with equal panache. After he was ordained to be a reverend, Davis would not perform the old blues pieces, and favored gospel songs spreading the word of the Lord. He also sported several party pieces in his song list. Singers in those years performed on the street, private gatherings, and any where they could get a few coins, a bed or a plate of food. It was essential that they varied their playing and provide tunes attractive to different kinds of listeners.

Davis used a big body Gibson acoustic guitar, chosen for its rich, profound basses and penetrating higher notes – great for making his music heard beyond street noise. Additionally, he wore finger picks, which act like a natural amplifier and protect the fingers from becoming sore when playing for a long period, as entertainers did back then. He used a big plastic thumb pick pushed high up, close to his hand, and a stainless steel on the fore finger.

Incredibly, he only used one finger to pick the guitar strings, which doesn’t seem possible, bearing in mind the complexity of his music. The thumb might jump all over the strings, never being content to play only the bass strings. The thumb may also pick out of time and double up on the beat, which represents incredible control. Another hallmark movement was his single string run work. He would pick a single string alternately using his fore finger and thumb in rapid[quick fire succession at lightning speed, singing at the same time!

Many master guitarists picked with just a single finger (Doc Watson, Big Bill Broonzy, Blind Boy Fuller) but no one was as slick and creative as Gary Davis. His songs were really creative including a large variation in chord sequences utilized. A lot of ragtime blues songs have a standard chord sequence depending on the key used, and they sequences are significantly more involved than a standard blues chord sequence in An or E, but the Reverend further extended the progressions giving a new plateau of musical diversity.

Reverend Gary Davis has been a fountain of inspiration for a great many guitarists over the years and his legacy will always be with us.

Acoustic Blues Guitar Tips – Reaching The Next Level

Don’t get in a flap – it’s not unusual for your progress to slow down now and again. Every musician, whatever what their musical preference, knows the symptoms. One fine day it dawns on you that you’ve performed the same old thing for a long time, and you are not getting any better. On top of that, you’re not trying to add other tunes to your repertoire. What’s going on here? You’ve hit a full stop, attained your level, you’re stuck, doomed never to get any better and attain your ambition, which is to be hailed as the greatest guitar master that ever played.

Is there something you can do?

Well, of course there is. At least, let me give you some idea of what works in my case. As you can possible guess, a lot of it is based in the mind, unless you are just practicing so much that you are physically fed up of playing! Some master players, like BB King, don’t practice for hours, and just perform. By the way, he also confided that he’s afraid each time he plays, as he thinks that ‘this time it won’t work’ and ‘I’m just not good enough’.

Try and leave it alone!

Of course this is a difficult thing to do for us guitarists. Many of the best guitarists indicate that they played licks and songs a countless number of times to be at the top (and I’m sure it’s true), so you have to practice until we’re exhausted, don’t we? Right and wrong.

It’s true that we are improving and reinforcing the muscular skills by putting our hands on the right strings again and again, but if these actions are mechanical, without the passion behind it, then it’s not productive. Get the mind trained – why are you learning guitar? You play because it’s your passion.

Relax for a few days. Forget that complicated song you’ve been trying to learn. After a week or so not playing, you’ll possibly find that the music just comes naturally.

Its beneficial to revisit the first steps

Inevitably, when we improve in our playing, more basic things that we do are taken as learned as we improve our skills. As we progress, we can get a little loose with our basic ways of playing, which have a beauty all of their own. Return to them and re-learn them. Explore the music of the old masters and understand how their techniques were based on solid foundations.

Play really simple stuff for a week or so, but play it with feeling and give attention to every little detail.

Get Comfortable Playing Your Playing.

When you are at ease with the music, then it flows and comes naturally. Each one of us can get better, but its a fact that we all have a boundary of playing ability. Recognition of this and assimilating it, will make you at ease. Talk to “perhaps I can’t progress further – I’ll make sure that the the music I do perform the very best it can be.” After you get into this state of mind, you’ll progress! It’s almost supernatural!

There are many levels of expertise, and we can’t always be the best. Someone once said “if just the best birds sang in the forest, it would be a be very quiet place indeed”. Know your level of expertise and be content with it. Every one of us is unique and will produce unique sounds. Eric Clapton is often hailed a fantastic blues guitarist, but when playing the acoustic guitar, Tommy Emmanuel makes him seem merely adequate.

Of Course, It’s Mostly In Our Thoughts.

Its not certain where I’m going with this tip, but let me tell you a little tale. When I was a young man, I played along with a friend of mine, who was always less proficient than I was. It was because I practiced much more than he did back then. I loved ‘Police Dog Blues’ by Blind Blake but for me at that time it was too tricky to tackle.

This friend of mine moved abroad and perhaps 11 months after he left, while talking on the phone, he casually told me that he had taught himself ‘Police Dog’. The idea that a ‘less capable’ guitar player had learned this song was difficult to take. I picked up the guitar and taught myself the song in around three days. This is not a testimony to my talents, but rather an indictment of my faulty way of thinking. Most musicians have quite a lot of of arrogance, and quite a sizable ego.

This needs to be understood, controlled and channeled to the good side of the Force!

Play With Other Guitar Players.

It’s great to play with other musicians from several of ways of thinking. Primarily, it’s great fun. There aren’t many things more enjoyable than like jamming along with other guitar players, even when it brings along a sense of competition. This competition is motivating. While playing in a group, musicians are aware of each others capabilities. We all have our strong and weak points, and the wise player reinforces your strength with his own. He will also attempt to hide your weakness, and the overall sound can be a wonderful example of synergy – this signifies that the result is greater than all it’s parts added together.

If the guitarists are more proficient than you, then this will gently stretch you, giving you new ideas and helping you progress.

Play Away Your Normal Style.

I heartily condone this one, as it’s a lot of fun. If you normally play blues, then learn some jazz. If you are a picker, then become a temporary strummer. I think you know what I mean. Now and again we get fixed in one track and say that we are this or that kind of guitarist. We just play the guitar and learning various musical techniques can only aid you to play higher standard.

Take It Easy.

Relax. It’s not that important. You won’t play excellent guitar if you are too stressed or too heavy about it. Some of the modern blues men can be particularly intense and I’m not sure why. Perhaps it’s because we would like to play the same as the classic blues players and that kind of outlook goes with the territory. Don’t get bogged down with that kind of thinking. You will never be be the old blues man, because the way we live is very different. Be yourself, that’s all that has to be done – the rest will come.

Online Guitar Lessons – The End of Traditional Instruction?

300px E Guitare horiz Online Guitar Lessons The End of Traditional Instruction?

Image via Wikipedia

The advent of the Internet has revolutionized guitar instruction. Formal guitar instruction is becoming less and less prevalent. Online guitar lessons are becoming more and more popular. Why is this shift occurring? Why are people choosing online guitar lessons over instructor led courses? There are several factors that contribute to this change. Price and convenience are two of the main factors for this shift.

Traditional Instructor led courses are great for students who have true musical aspirations. This category includes professional musicians and music students among others. In fact, I do not believe that any online guitar lessons can meet the needs of this category. They need to learn sheet music. They need to learn the minutiae of playing that only a true music teacher can provide. The one-on-one instruction is paramount to their success.

For the category of people who are only interested in recreational play, traditional lessons have long been the only choice. Books and early VHS instructions were fraught with problems. These media were and still are very static and not well suited to then dynamic nature of guitar playing. This category of aspiring guitar players had to invest a lot of money and time to learn the guitar. Lessons can run anywhere from $30 per hour to over a $100, depending on the pedigree of your instructor. Students had to make time in their often-busy schedules for the lessons. Finally most students had to travel to the location where the class was being offered. The costs of instruction got quite high as many lessons had to be scheduled in order to make any noticeable progress. We can see that the above factors, while acceptable to most students with professional aspirations, were often too much for the casual student.

People that want to play recreationally make up the majority of people trying to learn to play the guitar. They need a method of instruction that is not expensive and is convenient. Enter online guitar lessons!

Online guitar lessons offer the flexibility that instructors cannot. The online lessons usually cost what one-hour of instructor led training would. This is very appealing because it is a one-time fee. No recurring expenses that drain your finances over a long period of time. The online guitar lessons that you buy can teach you for months instead of one hour. You get a lot of bang for your buck.

The next benefit of online guitar lessons is that they are convenient. You do not need to travel to any location to learn how to play the guitar. You can do it in your own home. No braving traffic or parking hassles. You are learning in the comfort of your own home. In addition to this, you do not have to have a set schedule to take the classes. Most of us already lead busy lives and have little time to spare. With online guitar lessons you can learn whenever you want. This fun activity can be learned at your leisure. If you can’t do it one day there is no stress. This is supposed to be enjoyable after all, not a stressful time management challenge.

We can see from the points above that online guitar lessons are very appealing to the aspiring recreational guitar student. Since this category of people make up the large majority of potential students, it is understandable that they would shun the heavier commitments required for traditional guitar instruction.

If you are interested in online guitar lessons, consider Jamorama. It is a complete multimedia online guitar course with many more benefits than those listed above, and none of the downfalls of having an instructor.

How To Play Metal and Rock Guitar – 7 Fast Tips

How to play metal or rock guitar is a great decision to make considering the skills you can learn from such a technical style of music. If you think about it, metal guitarists have a great sense of tempo, rhythm, and technique.

Learning how to play metal guitar will greatly improve your speed along with your technique just like some of the professionals have accomplished. Here are 7 tips to help your development of brutal metal on the guitar.

1. Learn open-chord break-downs.

Once you get to your average break-down section of a tune, you’ll discover that it’s mostly executed with the open chord. This is done by palm-muting the strings by placing your strumming hand on the strings while still picking.

With enough distortion, the palm-mute should create a powerful crunch that’s typically heard in break-downs. Create your own patterns in different rhythmic variations for your own personalized touch to any metal guitar song.

2. Shop for guitars used by other professional metal guitarists.

Using a guitar that’s made for pop rock or jazz guitar really isn’t going to give you the playing action or speed that’s necessary to rip through a metal song. Learn what your favorite metal guitarists play and try them out at your local music store.

3. Use a drop tuning.

Drop tuning is used so that all power chords can be played with one finger, making the chord changes much faster. In drop ‘D’ tuning, the notes from the lowest to highest string are ‘D’,'A’,'D’,'g’,'b’, and ‘e’ respectively.

You can tune even lower by using the drop ‘C’ tuning where the strings from lowest to highest are ‘C’,'G’,'C’,'f’,'a’, and ‘d’ respectively. Experiment with the tuning that’s right for you and how heavy you want to be.

4. Utilize the first four frets where a lot of awesome riffs can be created.

Sometimes to create really awesome riffs for metal guitar, using less notes and chords is more powerful. Use a palm-muted pattern of picking chords between only the first three frets of the guitar including the open chord.

You’ll begin to hear a very dark sound that grinds really well. This is a common practice among common death metal songs.

5. Use an amp with adequate distortion.

You’re going to need an amplifier that can supply enough distortion, but be careful to not saturate your tone. Keeping your distortion level at 75% should be just enough to give crunch without sacrificing any tone.

6. Develop your double-picking skills.

Fast double-picking riffs are the meat of most metal guitar songs. Experiment with how they’re executed by picking between the lowest and second lowest strings in different rhythms and tempos.

7. Single notes on the thickest string are sometimes just as strong as full chords.

Even though metal guitar songs have choruses containing tons of power chords, single notes can reign just as powerful, while giving it a southern rock flare. Try playing a progression using the open string and frets 3 and 5 to spice up an average metal song.
