Dealing with Band Politics: why it doesn’t have to be so complex

This article was written by guest contributor Brian Botkilarguing2 300x199 Dealing with Band Politics: why it doesn’t have to be so complexler.

Band Politics- the very phrase strikes fear into the hearts of musicians everywhere.  But, it doesn’t have to be as scary as it sounds.

Let’s face it; no one likes to think about the politics of music-making.  We’d all rather just make music, and let everything else work itself out- but in reality, we have to confront these issues from time to time.

Who leads the pack?

One of the most common ways in which “band politics” rears its ugly head is in the power struggle of who’s “in charge”- something that can cause a lot of stress on the everyday band. It’s important to talk about the interests of each band member, and rather than knighting one member as the “leader,” allow each member to offer their own skills to the greater good of the band. By sitting down and talking to each other about how your non-musical skills and interests could be applied to the band, you can avoid the power-plays and struggles that often come with a group of people working towards one common goal.

Goals

That brings me to our next important note: goals.  Everyone has different goals in music-making – fame, money, personal accomplishment; all of these are common in a band.  However, it’s good to talk about these things when you take band politics into consideration. Sit down and talk about what you each want out of your band experience.  It will help to give you an idea about where you’re headed together.  What do you do if one member isn’t interested in touring or in being a working band (preferring to be a hobbyist musician) and the rest of you want to play huge festivals?  These things, if left unchecked, can lead to fierce arguments. Talk about it ahead of time!  Make a list of each member’s goals and think about how you can roll them into your one unified vision. It might be easier than you think.

Arguments – they’ll happen!

Speaking of arguing, it’s a common occurrence in the everyday band, but it’s not as bad as you think it is. In reality, it’s better to argue (constructively) than to bottle stuff up and start resenting each other.  You probably spend more time with your band members than you do with some of your family, so be ready to get to know each other and what sets each member off!  Try to think of arguments as friendly debates.  Whatever you might debate about, try to approach the issues with respect. Understand there will be differences of opinion. Be sympathetic to the needs and goals of your bandmates; put yourself in their shoes and think about their position. This can give you real insight into how they operate.  You’ll find that it will be easier to reach a good outcome if you approach things with a sympathetic and understanding tone, rather than a stalwart, “I’m always right”-stance.

Don’t sweat the small stuff!

Finally, try to not let petty things tear you apart.  A million small issues come up daily in a band – how your drummer interacted with a fan, what someone said about you on Facebook, etc. etc.  These small things, whatever they may be, can really turn into large issues and lead to the stresses that rip bands u, if you don’t talk about how to handle them.  Don’t stress the small stuff, but pay attention to it.  If one member has an issue with the way another handles one aspect of your business, it’s better that they talk about it and come to an agreement, rather than it stewing on the back burner for too long.  Create an air of understanding on how you will each approach issues as they arise, rather than letting a big queue of small things turn into a huge boulder.

In closing…

You’ll notice a common theme in everything I’m saying here; communication.  Communication is the best way to avoid issues with band politics.  If you don’t talk, you don’t progress. Being open and transparent makes it easier to allow for those band members in charge of specific needs to make the decisions they need to make without feeling like you all must converse a million times over about the same thing.  If you know that someone has something under control, you can go on doing what you all need to do to be successful, and the little things won’t matter as much.  Try to not hold large, drawn-out band meetings a few times a year.  Rather, sit down and go over what’s going on in your band quickly before practice.  You’ll get through things faster, and you’ll find yourselves communicating with each other more often, and with more efficiency.

I know that some of these things might seem to be plain knowledge, but you’d be surprised how often I talk to bands wherein one member does everything – marketing/management/etc., and the others “just make music.”  This isn’t the way things can work anymore, not if you want to be a successful band.  It may seem like the President of the United States does everything himself, but in reality, he has a team of people who are constantly working with him.  Treat your band the same; you may have a leader (most bands do, after all), but you are all working towards the same goals.  Share in the work, and you will share in the success. Remember; no one does it alone.

Finding Great Acoustic Guitar Lessons ‘ What to Look For

Image via Wikipedia

Using acoustic guitar lessons may seem like an easy thing to do, especially because of the availability of online tutorials and programs to help beginners learn to play the guitar. However, a lack of knowledge of what makes a good acoustic guitar lesson/tutorial combined with tutorials that are only out to take advantage can be disastrous for the beginner player. Luckily, there are a few features that are imperative to finding a good tutorial, and knowing/using them in your search can make the difference between success and failure with the guitar.

Navigation

Learning to navigate through lessons and subjects with acoustic guitar lessons can be one of the most important, if not the most important feature of online tutorials to find when searching for a good one. The best acoustic guitar lessons use navigation to enhance the learning process rather than just an afterthought. Instead of allowing a video to play through, for example, you may find a lesson that allows you to pause or backtrack in it.

Multiple Lessons

Another commonly popular feature of acoustic guitar lessons for beginners is that of the teaching method used. Good tutorials or programs will often use the method that multiple views and imbursement into the material will help you more than anything, and will therefore give you multiple ways of looking at a note in a lesson. For example, they may use a far-off view of the guitar as a whole being played, a close up of the hand/finger placement, and an easy guitar tab all on the same screen for your viewing during the lesson.

Everything’s Covered

Some online programs or tutorials for acoustic guitar lessons have a major problem, and it’s one you should definitely avoid while searching for your top choice. This problem is that the lessons often barely cover the “beginner” level material, if that. Some programs even stop after the basic notes and techniques, requiring you to find songs and guitar tabs to aid you in learning. Always look for a website that offers lessons for at least intermediate level guitar players if at all possible.

Payment

Getting what you pay for is very true for acoustic guitar lessons because, though the information is usually found free somewhere, it is rarely found put together in a cohesive fashion to encourage learning rather than confusion and misunderstanding. Purchasing a well-organized program for learning to play the guitar can be very beneficial to your success overall as a guitar player. Always search for your previous criteria and give the options a test lesson before you decide for sure.

Didgeridoo – Quite Possibly the Oldest Instrument in the World

The didgeridoo is possibly the oldest instrument in the world with many experts believing it to have been played for at least the last 40,000 years. Across the top of Australia Aborigines have been using the didgeridoo at ceremonies for thousands of years, and there are even cave drawings showing the didgeridoo being played that are at least 2,000 years old. Their belief is that the playing of the didgeridoo keeps them in touch with their shamanistic beliefs through the induction of an alpha state.

The traditional Aborigine didgeridoo is made from eucalyptus branches that have been hollowed out by termites. A didgeridoo made in this way can take up to twelve months and a skilled didgeridoo maker will know if a branch is ready just by tapping on it with their fingernails. The branch walls need to be a certain thickness to produce the correct sound and it is the length of the log that determines its key, with longer lengths giving a lower pitch.

The origins of the didgeridoo are told in an Aboriginal legend which starts with three men camping by a log fire on a cold night many many moons ago. Needing more wood for the fire one of the men grabbed a eucalyptus log which he found very light to the touch. Just before throwing it into the fire he noticed that it was covered in termites. His friends were complaining of the cold and insisting that he throw the log onto the fire, but as he did not want to kill the termites he gathered up the ones from the outside and placed them with the rest inside the hollowed out branch. He then put the log to his lips and blew out the termites. The termites blown into the night sky became the stars and the first didgeridoo was created.

Playing a didgeridoo is different to other wind instruments. As you breathe down the didgeridoo you must do so with ‘loose lips’, this creates a vibration as it travels downs the tube. When the vibration exits out of the other end of the tube it does so as an amplified drone. It is somewhat similar to playing a tuba, but the lips are more relaxed. If you are unsure how to create loose lips, think of what it is like to blow a “raspberry”. Once you have mastered the drone, you can practice making other sounds by moving your tongue or cheeks while blowing into the instrument.

Although not necessary, to play the didgeridoo like a real pro you have to learn circular breathing, and this takes practice. You have to inhale air through the nose while simultaneously releasing it from the mouth. Without this skill a player will not be able to produce the favored non-stop sound.

Today termites are not a necessity and a number of other materials have been found to make excellent modern didgeridoos. Very popular at the moment is the bamboo didge whilst teak is known to work a treat with excellent sound quality and even synthetic didgeridoos have became the favored choice by many over the last few years.

If, however, you do put in the effort to learn the didgeridoo then it appears that there may be some unexpected benefits. In a study conducted in Switzerland they looked into what effects playing the didgeridoo may have on the conditions of sleep apnea and snoring. The study following people who are learning to play has found that those mastering the art are, after a few months, experiencing fewer incidences of these conditions. They concluded that the upper airways were being trained to function more efficiently due to the type of breathing that is required to play a didgeridoo.

A Guide To Piano For Beginners

Classes that involve piano for beginners would include an introduction to reading and understanding the keys, chords and how to read notes. The piano is unlike any other instrument and sounds wonderful as stand alone music or as part of a group. The intense sound of a piano is one that captivates audiences with power or soothes them with serenity.

Budding musicians always find it exciting to explore the world of piano for beginners. Whether this is their first venture playing the piano or being used as a reminder of forgotten skills, piano for beginners is a terrific way to develop or improve skills.

The most popular place to find a piano for beginners class would be a local high school or college university music department. Occasionally, instructors will offer piano tutoring to non-students. Students, on the other hand, will have a variety of choices within the music curriculum. Otherwise, a quick visit to a local specialty music store may provide leads on potential instructors.

When learning piano for beginners, it’s important for hopefuls to select the best instructor by evaluating his/her experience, educational background and accomplishments. The most generally sought instructors will possess some type of music degree or an equivalent amount of musical experience. A potential instructor should be interviewed regarding their history in music, fee requirements, length of classes, policy on missed sessions, etc. If the learner’s schedule is particularly hectic, he/she may wish to enlist the help of a private tutor as opposed to a group instructor.

Music lessons offered in a group will be scheduled by the instructor and will be less flexible toward each individual learner’s schedule. This is not to say that group lessons are not an excellent way to learn piano for beginners because they are. Simply put, private tutors are better for anyone with a hectic or unpredictable schedule. For example, a private tutor will have a more flexible schedule and perhaps willing to work around that of the learner’s daily routine. Whereas group classes are often held at the same time on a certain night, or nights, each week, a private tutor can be scheduled at any time during the day or evening without having to abide by a preset schedule. Internet courses, on the other hand, offer learners with the option of learning piano for beginners in the comfort of their own home at any time during the day or night. After all, where else could you learn piano in your pajamas?

Perhaps that most fun way to learn the piano for beginners is to just start playing. Some of the world’s most famous musicians are self-taught, so do not be afraid to go solo until you get comfortable with the keys and each of their unique sounds. Professional instruction is certainly the most suitable, but there is nothing wrong with a trifle practice before signing up for class. in point of pacts, the more familiar you`re with the piano, the sooner you`ll be on your way to the Grammy awards. Hey, you never know!

A Closer Look At MJ’s Thriller

“Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” – This song is one of four tracks on the album that “The King of Pop” Michael Jackson got songwriting credits for. One of the things that way too many people forget about when speaking of MJ is that he was not only a great singer and dancer, he was also a very creative songwriter.

“Baby Be Mine” – To get an idea of how good this album is consider this: “Baby Be Mine” is one of only two songs that wasn’t a hit single. This is a pretty catchy song to be one of just two tunes not released as a single.

“The Girl Is Mine” – The lyrics are cheesy as hell but I think that’s part of the song’s charm. This is a tune I’ve started to enjoy more and more over time. The back & forth between Jackson & Beatles legend Paul McCartney is pretty damn cute. Jackson wrote this song.

“Thriller” – At this point the music video is probably more famous than the song which I think is kind of unfortunate. It’s a great song and Jackson’s performance is brilliant. Who else could have made this song work?

“Beat It” – The “rock crossover” song on the album includes a great guitar solo by Eddie Van Halen. Jackson doesn’t get enough credit for stuff like this. Jackson wrote “Beat It.”

“Billie Jean” – The most perfect example of a Michael Jackson song. If you are ever questioning MJ’s talent remember that he wrote and performed this song.

“Human Nature” – This is one of the tracks I enjoy most lately because it hasn’t been overplayed like many of the other songs on Thriller. It’s a beautiful song.

“P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” – I don’t think any song makes me want to dance more than “PYT.” Much like “Human Nature,” this is one of my favorites partly because it hasn’t been overplayed.

“The Lady In My Life” – The least good song on the album? Most likely. Still pretty damn good? For sure.

Does reading about this brilliant album makes you want to learn how to sing yourself? Well, I won’t guarantee that you will be able to sing just like MJ (who can?) but you can significantly improve your vocals with Singorama online singing lessons which are 100% guaranteed.

Backup Singing, Be A Shadow and Shine

If you want to be center stage and lead act of the show, you cannot sing backup. You must sing behind the headliner, not overpower them. You must be able to play a supporting position to the headliner and not feel left out if you want to sing backup.

To sing backup is much harder than it looks. Similar to an instrumental accompanist, this style of singing requires that you listen very intently and be responsive . You must learn to breathe and begin and end your line as the main singer does. You must, in effect be the singers shadow.

If you can control your place on the stage, see to it that you can see the singer at all times. To sing backup effectively, this is very, very critical to your job. Learn to watch the singer at all times. If the singer decides to take another chorus or makes a mistake, you can follow them only if you are watching and aware. Watch the singer intently and always. The singer may use a hand gesture to indicate a repeat from the top or even a modulation so be aware.

As the singer goes, so must you. Blend to their phrasing. You can start your phrase just behind the singers melody if you want to blend properly. Sometimes you are not sure of how loud the singer will be so start quietly and gradually come up to the proper level after the melody develops. Another tip is to be easy on the consonants at the start of a line. It may be advisable not to pronounce a hard consonant at all as it may produce a unpleasant conflict with the main melody.

The end of melodies are just as critical as the beginning. If you gradually ease off your phrase as the singer does the same, you will not end after they do and cause much embarrassment to yourself and the band as a whole. Listen, watch, blend lines and you can be a professional backup singer every band would love to have.
